The Best Holiday Destinations to Visit in April
I bet you didn’t think I was going to start out with Iceland, did you! Yes, Iceland can be one of the best places to visit in April. Days grow longer during this month and the Icelanders can almost smell the sweet summer air. Although the sun and warm weather are almost there, it still has a month to go until true summer.
However, April is the best time to visit Iceland for whale watching as it is the beginning of the whale season. There are plenty of whale watching tours departing from Reykjavik. You stand a great chance to see the minke whale up close! I should mention April brings puffin season too. Yup, April marks your chance to see those cute/funny looking birds in Iceland!
April sees a definite increase in temperatures in Greece, with a sunny start to the month and only a few rainy days scattered here and there.
It’s a nice time of year to go to Greece. You beat the summer crowds, but you also miss the colder, wetter weather of winter. Athens’ average temperature is 20°C, but after dark, it still drops quite a bit to 10°C.
The sea is around 16°C, but you’ll still want some sunscreen because there’s more sun going on. You’ll see an average of nine hours of sunshine a day – more sunshine, fewer clouds, and less rain.
If you thought March was spring-like in Cyprus, then you’re going to love April. The average temperature suddenly jumps to around 17°C, but it can easily reach into the low 20s.
There are 11 hours of sunshine a day, and it’s not too hot yet, making this a beautifully balanced time of year to visit Cyprus. Sure, April brings a little bit of isolated rain across the country, but it’s generally pretty nice. The island nation is looking nicely green this month, with lots of flowers and fruit around. A high amount of visitors turn up in Cyprus from across Europe thanks to the Easter Vacation period for schools, but it’s nothing compared to Cyprus beaches in the summer so enjoy it!
Fall is just around the corner in April… but it’s not here yet, and it’s a great time to be in South Africa.
The whole country is basically starting to cool down, and rainfall is increasing. But fall here won’t be like it is where you’re from (probably, anyway); Cape Town, for example, has more of a Mediterranean climate. The average temperature in South Africa is 18°C, so it’s definitely not freezing.
In the evening, however, the average temperature drops to 12°C. Bring layers. The seas are still fairly warm, which means surfing is still very much an option. If you love surfing, the temperature (19°C) won’t be anywhere near to stopping you.
It’s a great time of year for sightseeing and birdwatching; KwaZulu-Natal Midlands in particular this time of year is pretty nice.
During April, temperatures in the Maldives are an average of 29°C, and nighttime temperatures are about 26°C; you still won’t need anything to keep you warm in the evening. But the sea climbs up to the hottest it gets all year – 30°C. That’s hotter than the air temperature! Crazy.
It’s all about chilling on the beaches, watersports, and enjoying the great weather. It’s one of the most beautiful places in the world to visit during April!
Early April is the “main” start for hanami – cherry blossom viewing season. From Hiroshima to Tokyo, people will start spreading their blue tarpaulins under the pink, blooming trees, arranging themselves with friends and plenty of snacks (and drinks) to celebrate the warmer weather.
There’s even an actual forecast for cherry blossom on the TV weather in Japan. The general rule of thumb is that the further south you are, the earlier it starts.
One thing to note: places like Kyoto, Hiroshima, Osaka, and Tokyo get very busy and crowded with tourists. People come to see the famous sights layered with the quintessential light pink of cherry blossom. All in all April is a great time to visit Japan for the cherry blossoms.
April also signals an end to the drier weather of winter. The skies get more cloudy, it starts raining more, but then again, hiking this time of year is much more pleasurable than in the freezing cold. Wet weather gear is advisable. Or do as Japanese people do and have your umbrella handy!
On the other hand, down in Okinawa, it actually gets warm enough for the beaches to open. If you’re a fan of uncrowded beaches, this might be a good time to visit Okinawa – especially in late April.
April is when spring properly begins in Jordan – even the desert offers up a view of myriad wildflowers. This is an excellent time of year to visit Jordan; temperatures aren’t too warm and even the nights aren’t that cold anymore.
Being such a “perfect” time of year to visit weather-wise, this also means that it’s popular with tourists, and sights begin to get busy. However if you don’t mind crowds Jordan is a great place to visit in April. Amman is a comfortable 22°C, as is Petra; the Dead Sea and Aqaba are reaching temperatures of 30°C by now.
April is a beautiful spring month in Portugal; this is the month when you’ll get to enjoy some good Easter celebrations, too. Weather-wise, it’s getting really good in April. Lisbon hits highs of 20°C, but be warned; it can still get quite cold in the evenings. It’s a great time of year to visit Portugal, especially the countryside or the Algarve.
Spring flowers will be in bloom, and the land will be bursting into life. Days are starting to get longer as well: at the start of April, the sun sets at 8 pm, but by the end of the month, it’s more like 8:40 pm. That means more time for wandering around and enjoying the chilled atmosphere of Portugal’s towns and cities.
April is another dry and sunny month for Peru’s coastal regions – as well as the deserts. Lima sees highs of 24°C and lows of 18°C. It’s shoulder season in the country, and things should be a little cheaper and less busy; the beach is still a viable option, too.
Up in the Andes in places like Lake Titicaca and Cusco, the rainy season starts to ease off. There’s a high of about 19°C, there’s still quite a lot of cloud cover, but the natural scenery is beautiful here. The Amazon Rainforest is still hot and very humid, with highs of 31°C; rains occur in the afternoon either in downpours or all-out storms. All in all it’s a great time to visit Peruvian sights like Machu Picchu!
April is a great time to visit Turkey. The country sees the start of spring begin to happen in Turkey. The temperatures really start to reflect that; the average high across the country is 15°C (nights being about 8°C). Days continue to get longer, with the sunset inching towards 8 pm as April comes to a close. Since it’s a few months from full on summer, crowds are low.
For warmer weather at this time of year, coastal regions – particularly the south – are where it’s at. Marmaris and Antalya see averages of 21°C in April, and the sea is a (bearable) 18°C. There’s still rain, and the weather can generally be pretty changeable, especially in more inland and mountainous areas. Silver lining – it’s tulip season in Turkey!
One of the best places to visit in April is Sri Lanka. It’s the last month of “prime” tourist season, however April is when Sri Lanka’s monsoon season starts, but it’s still a great time of year to visit Sri Lanka.
Settling in towards the end of the month, rain increases and is pretty much a daily feature till June. The first areas of Sri Lanka to see the increase in rain are the southern and western coasts. Kandy gets temperatures around the mid-twenties and is prime for trekking: try out trails in the Knuckles Mountain Range. Most of April is generally pretty warm and sunny, with temperatures in the early 30s and around eight hours of sunshine per day.
Still wondering where to go in April? One of the best times to visit Egypt, April is a month of change weather-wise. This is a pleasant time to visit: Alexandria, still lacking humidity, now sees warm, sunny days with a bit of patchy rain here and there.
Cairo is warm, with some rain, and average temperatures of 24°C (though it can drop to 14°C at night) and quite high humidity – 60 to 70%. Interested in a Nile River Cruise or want to visit Bedouin villages? Then April would be an excellent time to book your Egypt vacation; check out Marsa Matruh, for example.
March is the start of Vietnam’s spring season. If you get yourself into the northern countryside you’ll be rewarded with flowers in full bloom and beautiful colors!
April is spring in Hong Kong, meaning it is a wonderful time to visit. Spring is also shoulder season so it will be less crowded, but still expect to find crowds – it’s Hong Kong!
Hong Kong is a place like no other, and there are so many things to do there you’ll never get bored.
With each new street brings something new and exciting. The food, the sights, the buildings and textures, make Hong Kong a must-visit destination in April!

Plan & Pack
Make sure to protect your eyes from the sun in Italy. There are a lot of options for sunglasses and everyone should own at least a pair. It’s best to make sure they do have UV protection for the health of your eyes.
We made our first investment in quality polarized sunglasses with a pair of SMITH Optics Lowdown 2. Truthfully, not everyone needs to invest $150 in a pair of sunglasses, but they do make a huge difference from the crappy $10 ones.
Skin cancer is for real, even in Italy! Don’t forget your SPF when traveling around Italy. We recommend ordering some online before leaving the house as you will need it underneath the sun in the summer.
We highly recommend getting an eco friendly sun cream that does not contain harmful chemicals.
I love real books, but for traveling it can be easier to carry a lighter and more compact item like a Kindle. Plus, then you can download new books on the go!
Please consider purchasing a travel water bottle before your trip! We hate to see one time use plastic bottles ending up in the ocean. The tap water is so good here – seriously please don’t be one of those tourist that buys plastic water bottles in Italy. It’s a waste of money and plastic!
Delsey 24″ Spinner
Delsey makes my favorite hard side luggage and after five years of travel around the world, they have yet to let me down. Plus their bags look incredibly stylish, which is essential in countries like Italy. Many of their bags have heavy duty wheels, TSA accepted locks and two full packing compartments with tie-down straps and a zippered divider. If you want something different, check out our other favorite carry on luggage pieces.
Most hotels will provide you with a towel, but they often aren’t suitable or allowed on the beaches. I like to travel with a microfiber towel because they are light and fold up small, and they also don’t cling on to sand our dirt. Here are a few of our favorite travel towels.
